Description

The University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), founded in 1495, is the origin of the Galician university. With campuses in the cities of Lugo and Santiago, it offers 49 degrees, 62 master’s degrees and 55 doctoral programs. With 50 departments and more than 300 research groups, USC is a complete university with teaching, research and knowledge transfer in the areas of Experimental Sciences, Health Sciences, Humanities, Juridical and Social Sciences and Engineering.

The USC has two strategic projects for the development of its campuses that are closely linked to biotechnology and its applications.

Campus Vida promotes a new model of research organization based on stable collaboration between public research, the health sector and the biotechnology business environment in order to act as a vector of economic and social growth based on scientific excellence.

The Terra Campus was born from the agreement between the USC and the General Secretariat of Universities, of the Xunta de Galicia, with the mission of transforming the campus of Lugo into a scientific and social reference in the fields of knowledge linked to the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the use of LAND. It forms a university environment specialized in the agri-food field.

The research of the USC is distributed in more than 300 research groups (Catalogue of research groups) of the 23 faculties, 5 technical schools, 16 university institutes, 11 own research centers and 3 singular centers.

In the areas of biotechnology and health, the unique centers are noteworthy:

  • Center for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials ( CiQUS )
  • Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases ( CiMUS )

The area of Valorization, Transference and Entrepreneurship (AVTE) is the service in charge of the integral management of the process of transference of the research results of the USC with the aim of increasing its social and economic impact and promoting university entrepreneurship.
